Fra i molti gruppi che si dedicano a quella variante di Americana al confine fra roots rock, folk, alternative country e indie rock, il capolavoro del genere viene prodotto dagli Akron/Family. Approcciandosi a tale musica dal versante freak folk, virando al massimo le dosi di psichedelica, gli Akron/Family - sotto la guida del guru Michael Gira - producono brani nervosi, tormentati ed emotivi, a tratti catartici e a tratti violenti, che costituiscono uno dei maggiori capisaldi del rock del decennio.

A quasi dieci anni di distanza dal disco in studio precedente, Dylan Carlson e soci abbandonano la distorsione esagerata degli album precedenti, per arricchire le atmosfere drone doom della band di accordi, melodie e assoli mutuati dal country e dal country rock, da cui anche la scelta della Telecaster per Carlson, e della presenza di Dan Tyack, che contribuisce con le chitarre pedal steel e lap steel. Un disco a tratti affascinante, a tratti conturbante, anche se gli strumentali lentissimi e asfissianti degli Earth non sono certamente per tutti.

Musica per balletto moderno, all'incrocio fra il progressive rock strumentale più proteiforme (Third Ear Band, Brian Eno) e l'indie rock, con l'ombra sempre presente dei grandi maestri delle musiche di accompagnamento come Ennio Morricone e Michael Nyman. La band di Portland stupisce per le capacità dei tre di produrre un'opera di ampio respiro perfettamente adeguata e dotata di una temperanza rara in un genere in cui spesso si fatica a comporre cinque brani significativi per un cd. Musica composta di giustapposizioni tematiche che raramente abbandonano la pista melodica, ma si articola in suite dotate di uno sviluppo narrativo. In particolare i primi due brani sono capolavori veri e propri.

Un eccellente disco di quel diffuso genere di musica indipendente americana influenzato dal roots rock e dall'alt country. Will Sheff si dimostra un narratore intelligente che inserisce nelle canzoni che trattano essenzialmente di problemi sentimentali e di droga riferimenti accattivanti alla figura del "Black Sheep Boy", una sorta di suo doppio dionisiaco - nel bene e nel male - ispirato al cantautore maledetto Tim Hardin.

Sicuramente la scelta migliore sarebbe stata pubblicare un solo disco tagliato di una ventina di minuti, invece che separare di sei mesi le due metà da 40 minuti l'una. Resta comunque un disco fondamentale nel mostrare cosa sia nel 2005 il nu metal, e di quanto, liberi dalle pastoie dell'iconoclastia nei confronti del metal tradizionale volutosi superare dai tempi dei Korn, i System of a Down siano una realtà matura e capace di scrivere musica hard che sfrutti influenze a 360 gradi per edificare una architettura personale e incredibilmente prolifica. Non ci sentiamo di separare i due album, vanno ascoltati insieme, uno dopo l'altro, per cogliere appieno la portata eccezionale del progetto.
