Il capolavoro assoluto del dark/goth anni '80 reca con sé tutti gli elementi del genere, dall'horror rock alla involuzione torturata, alla depressione apatica, senza mai rasentare la caricatura: è difficile fare musica del genere e prendersi (abbastanza) sul serio senza sfociare nella parodia, ma i Bauhaus riescono nell'impresa con agilità, senza annegare in una banale ripetizione dei temi di "Bela Lugosi's Dead".

Post-punk claustrofobico, cupo, sarcastico e dissacrante. Funziona perfettamente: questi australiani mostrano una terza via al post-punk di matrice anglosassone che non sia né quella sempre più sintetica/industriale (New Order) né quella dark/goth (Bauhaus, Cure), anche grazie alla capacità di attingere con discrezione a influenze quali Pere Ubu e Pop Group ("A Dead Song"). Musica senza alcun orizzonte di redenzione e senza alcuna apertura melodica. Il drumming insensato di Phill Calvert è il percussivismo più sciancato di John French (Captain Beefheart).

I BOC ce la mettono tutta per stare al passo coi tempi (sintetizzatori, british metal, AOR) senza tradire il loro stile di scrittura obliquo e sottile ("Joan Crawford"). Ci riescono abbastanza bene, confezionando alcuni classici ("Fire of Unknown Origin", "Veteran of the Psychic Wars") senza imbarazzare ed imbarazzarsi. Un disco onesto, che mostra però un lieve affaticamento.
